Features

Elegant and expansive, this grand Craftsman residence captures the very best of Berkeley’s architectural heritage. Designed and built by Louis Engler in 1913, the home offers timeless detail, generous proportions, and an enviable location in the heart of North Berkeley’s Gourmet District.

Set on an expansive lot with professionally landscaped gardens—fig, persimmon, and lemon trees alongside a flourishing herb garden—this 3,925 square foot home is equally suited to lively gatherings or quiet retreat. French doors open from the kitchen and sitting room to a private backyard oasis, complete with a storybook garden shed.

Inside, the home features eight bedrooms and four baths, including a lower-level studio apartment with a private entrance, kitchen, and bath—ideal for guests, extended family, or flexible living. The updated kitchen, paired with a butler’s pantry and writing nook, flows into the family room, creating a natural hub between the dining and kitchen spaces. The majestic living room, anchored by a striking fireplace, frames sweeping views of the Bay. Throughout, oak and Douglas fir floors highlight the home’s enduring warmth and craftsmanship, while playful bathrooms add distinctive charm.

Upstairs, the light-filled bedrooms offer both space and serenity. The primary suite soars above the Bay with an ensuite bath, while rear bedrooms overlook the lush gardens. A sun-filled playroom, cooled by natural breezes, completes the upper level. With radiant heat throughout, a newer boiler, washer/dryer on the lower level, and hookups upstairs, the home pairs historic beauty with modern comfort.

Cherished by the same family for decades, 1305 Arch Street is both a rare piece of Berkeley history and a beautifully livable home, blending period detail with thoughtful updates. Just moments from Chez Panisse, Walnut Square, the Cheese Board, Solano Avenue shops, and convenient transportation. This special home embodies timeless Berkeley elegance in one of the city’s most beloved neighborhoods.

I come from a family of builders, architects, engineers, and artists. My earliest memories involve color-sorting electrical wires and arranging tiles soon to be set in mortar. I’ve always been affected by spaces: their flow, light, smell, sound, design, and transformative powers. In spaces, I see and hear stories filled with how lives are lived. The storytelling business is my other love and a mainstay throughout my professional life. Working in documentary filmmaking for decades, has been one of the ways I’ve combined a passion for social justice and art. After building our house from the ground up and selling, then buying a beautiful decaying Spanish-style centurion and re-building again, the combination of my interests in architecture and personal narratives, led me to a career in real estate. I have the privilege of joining my mother, Norah Brower, whose 24 years of dedication, integrity and sterling advocacy for both sellers and buyers in the competitive Bay Area market has always been an inspiration. I believe houses can be vessels for our dreams and reflections and know firsthand both the promises and challenges of creating a space to call your own. I hope you will trust me to guide you through the challenging but ultimately rewarding process of buying or selling a home.
